Five Questions for Robinhood CEO Vlad Tenev
He’s bullish on the prospects for AI, crypto and Donald Trump.
What’s the biggest impact the Trump administration will have on the stock market?
Their intent appears to be to ensure that the US is the best place to do business and the leader in both of the emergent technology industries coming to the fore: crypto and AI. They’ve got smart people thinking through these problems, and so we should expect the bureaucracy to be reduced, more regulatory clarity and hopefully tighter integration with the private sector to make it happen.
Do you think there’s a point when the crypto markets get bigger than stocks?
If we play this well, they will merge. So, I like to think about crypto less as a distinct, tradable asset and more as a new technology—so, along the chain of filing cabinet and pen and paper, to mainframes. If you’ve got a tradable token on all blockchains, and it’s liquid, that’s essentially an IPO.
Robinhood now offers prediction markets on the app, so someone can bet on the outcome of an election. Do you see a distinction between how people invest in stocks and how they bet on sports?
I do. Unlike a typical betting platform, where the platform makes the odds, the prices in prediction markets are governed by a transparent, regulated exchange. And what that allows is better price discovery. Just like how we’re looking at stock markets today and making assessments for which way the tariffs are going to go, what the impact is going to be on the economy, prediction markets are a way to distill all the information and see how it affects the odds of certain events.
You have a personal investment in an AI startup called Harmonic. The idea is to create mathematical superintelligence. What is that ultimately going to do?
If you become superhuman at math, you essentially become superhuman across any quantitative domain—physics, biology, chemistry—and then you start making serious progress on problems like energy generation, longevity, fundamental physics.
Where is AI going to have the biggest impact on markets?
You’re already seeing a huge impact. A lot of the AI investment interest is concentrated on Nvidia. It’s become the No. 1-held stock on Robinhood, surpassing Tesla, which is another AI stock in its own right. I think AI is going to make investing more important, because if control over the technology is going to be centralized in the technology companies, then you have to be an investor in those companies to benefit.
