Letters released by Congress show pages signed by Bill Clinton, Leon Black and Ghislaine Maxwell
Here’s a look at pages that were contained in Jeffrey Epstein’s 50th birthday book. These images were released Monday by Congress with redactions after Epstein’s estate provided copies. The Wall Street Journal previously described and reported on these pages. See an analysis of the letter bearing Trump’s signature, which he has denied writing.
Table of Contents
Donald Trump and Bill Clinton were listed under the “Friends” section in the book’s table of contents, along with about 20 other associates. Other people were grouped under categories such as “Science,” “Brooklyn” and “Family.” While many letter writers weren’t famous, some categories had notable people.
Prologue
The book began with a one-page prologue signed by Epstein’s former girlfriend. Ghislaine Maxwell recently told Justice Department officials she assembled a book for Epstein’s 50th birthday but didn’t remember any names of people who made contributions to the album.
Bill Clinton
The letter was a single paragraph in Clinton’s distinctive scrawl. A spokesman for Clinton referred to a previous statement that the former president had cut off ties more than a decade before Epstein’s 2019 arrest and didn’t know about Epstein’s alleged crimes.
Les Wexner
The letter from Les Wexner, the retail billionaire, contained a short message and a line drawing of what appeared to be a woman’s breasts. Wexner declined to comment through a spokesman about his letter. Wexner previously said he cut ties with Epstein in 2007.
Ghislaine Maxwell
Maxwell also submitted her own letter with a collage of photos and captions, including pictures of Epstein’s private jets and properties as well as Epstein hugging a topless woman on a boat. Another page signed by Maxwell is a topless photo of her in a pool with Epstein. A lawyer for Maxwell had no immediate comment.
Alan Dershowitz
The letter from Alan Dershowitz , who represented Epstein in the first criminal case in the 2000s, included a mock-up of a “Vanity Unfair” magazine cover with mock headlines. Dershowitz said he had no recollection of writing the letter. “At the time, I had given him legal advice unrelated to his subsequent problems, and had participated in some of his Harvard seminars. I had no idea he was doing anything wrong.”
Leon Black
The submission with Leon Black ’s name had a handwritten poem with a rhyme scheme. It was signed: “Love and kisses, Leon.” A spokesman for Black, the co-founder of Apollo Global Management , declined to comment on the letter.
Vera Wang
The letter from fashion designer Vera Wang joked about putting Epstein on “The Bachelor” and suggested they go on a shopping trip. Wang didn’t respond to requests for comment. The designer told the Journal in 2023 that she regrets ever associating with Epstein.
Nathan Myhrvold
A seven-page letter from Nathan Myhrvold, a billionaire and former Microsoft executive, said he was sending photos from a recent trip to Africa. “They seemed more appropriate than anything I could put in words,” it read. A spokeswoman for Myhrvold previously said he didn’t recall the submission and that he is a wildlife photographer who “regularly shares photos of and writes about animal behavior.” undefined
Peter Mandelson
A 10-page letter from Peter Mandelson, the current U.K. ambassador to the U.S., included photos of whiskey and a tropical island, and referred to Epstein as “my best pal.” A spokesman for Mandelson previously declined to comment. In 2023, Mandelson told the Journal that he “very much regrets ever having been introduced to Epstein.”
Jean-Luc Brunel
The letter from Jean-Luc Brunel, who ran a modeling agency, says “10 is the most beautiful number” and lists Epstein and himself along with Euclid and Archimedes. Brunel died in 2022 in jail where French prosecutors said he was under investigation for the rape of minors and sex trafficking.
Henry Rosovsky
Harvard economist and former dean Henry Rosovsky included a short handwritten note that read, “For the man who has almost everything—but never enough of these!” The letter included a pair of color images that are labeled as “tit print.” Rosovsky died in 2022.
George Mitchell
The page from George Mitchell, a former U.S. senator and diplomat, reads in part: “Among your blessings has been the opportunity to lead a full, exciting, and fantastically varied life.” Mitchell didn’t immediately respond to a request for comment.
Ace Greenberg
Alan ‘Ace’ Greenberg was the CEO of Bear Stearns when Epstein was at the investment bank in the 1970s. His letter states: “Working with Jeffrey has been a pleasure and watching his meteoric success has given me many vicarious thrills.” Greenberg died in 2014.
Mort Zuckerman
A letter from Mort Zuckerman , who was then an owner of the New York Daily News, said that he had searched the newspaper for information about Epstein and joked he was born in Liechtenstein and had a wife and three children. Zuckerman didn’t respond to requests for comment.
Ghislaine Maxwell
The book concluded with a section called “The Next 50 Years.” It had two pages, including a photo of Epstein in a hammock and an image with the inscription: “Know when you are winning.” It was signed “Lots of love, Ghislaine.”
