Air India Flight 171 was a scheduled international passenger flight from Ahmedabad Airport, India to London Gatwick Airport, United Kingdom that crashed about 30 seconds after takeoff at 13:39 IST (08:09 UTC) on 12 June 2025. All but one of the 230 passengers and all 12 crew members died. An additional 19 people were killed and 67 seriously injured on the ground.
The Boeing 787-8 Dreamliner operated by Air India was destroyed. Several buildings in the hostel block of B. J. Medical College in Ahmedabad were also substantially damaged by impact and fire. This was the first fatal accident and hull loss involving the 787, which entered service in 2011.
According to a preliminary report by India's Aircraft Accident Investigation Bureau, the crash was caused by both engines losing thrust after their fuel control switches moved from the RUN to CUTOFF position. The cause of the switch movement remains under investigation.
